# Plugins

A plugin puts the tools of Surface into an agent with one install. The plugin `surface` has one source for Claude Code, Codex CLI and Cursor. It is in `plugins/surface` of the repository.

| Part | Name | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| MCP server | `surface` | Starts `surf mcp`. The `surf` command must be on the `PATH`. |
| Skill | `surface-code-writer` | The steps with the tools of the MCP server. |
| Skill | `surface-best-practices` | The rules of Surf. |
| Subagent | `surface-file-editor` | Edits `.surf` and `.surfs` files, and repeats the checks until they pass. |
| Rule | `rules/surface.mdc` | A rule of Cursor for `.surf` and `.surfs` files. |

The repository is private until version 1. An install from its address needs access to the repository.

## 1. Claude Code

1. Add the marketplace of the repository:

   ```text
   /plugin marketplace add https://git.solenovis.com/henning.liemant/surface
   ```

2. Install the plugin:

   ```text
   /plugin install surface@solenovis
   ```

The marketplace is `.claude-plugin/marketplace.json` at the root of the repository. Its name is `solenovis`.

## 2. Codex CLI

1. Add the marketplace:

   ```bash
   codex plugin marketplace add https://git.solenovis.com/henning.liemant/surface
   ```

2. Run `/plugins` in `codex`.
3. Install `surface`.

## 3. Cursor

The plugin has the folder `.cursor-plugin` for Cursor. Without the plugin, do these two steps:

1. Add the [MCP server](https://surface.solenovis.com/docs/mcp-server.md) in the MCP settings of Cursor.
2. Copy `plugins/surface/rules/surface.mdc` into `.cursor/rules` of your project.

An agent with no plugins can use each part alone:
